What are the different types of files you would use when working with metal?
There are 3 types of files which would use when completing metal work projects they are:
The files listed above would be used in the order they are arranged in order to get the best finish on the edges of the file. There are two types of file movements they are:
- Bastard File- used to remove a lot of material if needed in order to reach the construction line previously drawn on with a scribe
- Half-Round File- used to remove material but not as much as the Bastard File, similarly to get as close to the construction line as possible
- Flat File- used to remove little material and in order to smooth down the edges due to its fine teeth in comparison to the other two files listed
The files listed above would be used in the order they are arranged in order to get the best finish on the edges of the file. There are two types of file movements they are:
- Diagonal- used to remove material
- Straight back and forth- to smooth the material
Filing Process Demonstration Video
Watch the video below showing the filing process in action with the different strokes for the different types of files and blades being used.
sTAGES OF fILING pROCESS
- Ensure that the material is securely held in the vice and is not going to get damaged due to the grip in the vice
- Select the bastard file and file diagonally to as close to the construction line as you can by adding force in order to remove access material
- Once you have removed the majority to access material, begin to use the flat face of the half-rounded file in order remove less obstructing pieces of waste material.
- When you are extremely close to your construction line change to the flat file and begin the straightforward and back strokes in order to smooth the edges of the metal
- Repeat these steps on each edge of your material
